More Than Just Blue Whales

While the blue whales get most of the attention, they are not the only animals in these waters. If you are lucky, you might also see sperm whales. These are the whales with the huge, square heads that dive incredibly deep to hunt giant squid. You can also spot Bryde’s whales and sometimes even killer whales, though they are much rarer.

You are almost guaranteed to see dolphins. Huge pods of spinner dolphins live in the area. They get their name because they love to jump high out of the water and spin around in the air before splashing back down. They often swim right next to the whale watching boats, riding the waves created by the front of the ship. Looking down and seeing dozens of dolphins swimming playfully right below you is just as exciting as seeing the large whales.

Finding the Secret Beach

After a morning on the ocean, you will want to relax on the sand. The main beach in Mirissa is beautiful, but it can get busy. If you want a quieter spot, you need to find Secret Beach. It is not really a secret anymore, but it is much harder to get to, which keeps the crowds away.

To get there, you have to take a tuk-tuk up a very steep, narrow, rocky hill. The tuk-tuk drops you off, and then you have to walk the rest of the way down a dirt path through the trees. At the bottom, you find a small, hidden cove. Sharp rocks protect the beach from the big ocean waves, creating a calm, shallow pool of water that is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. There is usually just a single small bar selling cold drinks. It is a fantastic place to spend a lazy afternoon reading a book under the shade of a tree.

Iconic Views: Coconut Tree Hill and Parrot Rock

If you like taking photos, Mirissa has two very famous spots you need to visit. The first is Coconut Tree Hill. This is a high piece of land covered in bright red dirt that sticks out into the ocean. Just be careful, because when the tide comes in, the water covering the path can get quite deep and rough.

Sri Lanka has many famous surf spots, and Mirissa is a great place for both beginners and experienced surfers. The right-hand point break on the edge of the bay provides a nice, steady wave. It is a reef break, which means the water is shallow over rocks, so you need to pay attention to where you fall.

If you have never surfed before, there are plenty of small surf schools located right on the sand in neighboring Weligama, which is just a ten-minute drive away. Weligama has a very long, sandy beach with gentle waves that are perfect for learning. Evenings on the Sand
