When you look at photos of Sri Lanka, you usually see palm trees, hot beaches, and sweaty jungle safaris. But the island has a surprise hidden right in its center. If you take a car or a train up into the high mountains, the weather completely changes. The hot, sticky air vanishes. The temperature drops so much that you will actually need a thick sweater. The air smells like pine trees and fresh rain. You have arrived in Nuwara Eliya, the highest town in Sri Lanka.

Because the weather is so cool and wet, the landscape looks totally different from the rest of the country. Instead of coconut palms, you see massive pine forests, bright green vegetable farms, and millions of tea bushes covering the steep hills. It is a quiet, peaceful place that feels very far away from the busy, noisy streets of the capital city. It is the perfect destination to cool down, drink incredible tea, and enjoy some beautiful mountain scenery.

Welcome to Little England

Nuwara Eliya is often called “Little England” by the locals, and it is very easy to see why. Back in the 1800s, the British colonial planters discovered this area. They loved the cool weather because it reminded them of their home back in the United Kingdom. They decided to build a town here to escape the extreme heat of the lower plains.

When you walk around the center of Nuwara Eliya today, you can still see exactly what they built. Many of the old buildings have a classic Tudor style, with dark wooden beams on the outside and white walls. The most famous example is the Nuwara Eliya Post Office. It is a massive, bright red brick building right in the middle of town with a tall clock tower. It is one of the oldest post offices in the country and is still working today. You can actually buy a postcard here and send it to your family back home.

You will also see beautiful old houses with perfectly kept gardens, a famous golf course right in the middle of the city, and the Hill Club, which looks like a giant stone castle. It really feels like a small British village was picked up and dropped right onto the top of a tropical island.

The Heart of Ceylon Tea

The main reason Nuwara Eliya exists is tea. This area produces some of the finest, most expensive tea in the entire world, known globally as Ceylon Tea. The high altitude, the cold nights, and the misty mornings create the perfect conditions for growing tea leaves with a very light, delicate flavor.

Driving around the town, the hills are completely covered in tea bushes. They look like a thick, green carpet thrown over the mountains. You will constantly see tea pluckers working on the steep slopes. They wear brightly colored clothes and carry large baskets on their backs. They are incredibly fast, picking only the top two leaves and the newest bud from each branch by hand.

Visiting a working tea factory is an absolute must. The Pedro Tea Factory is very close to the town center and offers excellent tours. When you walk inside, the smell of fresh tea is incredibly strong. You can see the large wooden troughs where the green leaves are laid out to dry using warm air. You watch the noisy, heavy metal machines crush, roll, and sort the leaves into different sizes. The tour usually ends in a beautiful tasting room looking out over the fields, where you can drink a fresh cup of tea while the guide explains how to properly taste it.

Lake Gregory and Victoria Park

If you want to stay near the town, there are plenty of relaxing things to do. Lake Gregory is a large, man-made lake located just a short walk from the center. It was created by the British governor in 1873. Today, the area around the lake is a very popular park. The grass is kept perfectly short, and there are walking paths all the way around the water.

Families love coming here in the afternoon. You can rent a small swan-shaped pedal boat and take it out onto the water. There are also speedboats, jet skis, and even a few horses that you can ride along the edge of the lake. It gets very busy on the weekends with local tourists, but it is a great place to sit on a bench, eat some hot street food, and watch people enjoy their day.

Another great spot in town is Victoria Park. It is a very large public garden named after Queen Victoria. It is famous for its beautiful, colorful flowers, especially roses and orchids. The park is very well maintained, with large, old trees providing plenty of shade. It is also a surprisingly good place for bird watching. Many rare mountain birds, like the Indian Blue Robin, can be spotted hiding in the thick bushes early in the morning.

The Journey to the World’s End

For people who love hiking and wild nature, Nuwara Eliya is the starting point for one of the best treks in the country. About an hour drive from the town is Horton Plains National Park. This park is very different from Yala or Udawalawe. It is a high-altitude plateau covered in wild, yellow grass and thick, dark cloud forests. The air up here is very thin and extremely cold before the sun comes up.

The main hike in Horton Plains is a circular dirt path that takes about three hours to complete. The highlight of the walk is reaching a place called World’s End. This is a massive, sudden cliff. The ground simply drops away for almost 4,000 feet. If you stand near the edge on a clear morning, you can look down over the mountains all the way to the southern ocean, which is miles away.

You have to get there very early. By 9:00 AM, thick white clouds usually roll in and completely cover the cliff, turning the amazing view into a solid wall of white fog. Along the same hiking trail, you will also pass Baker’s Falls, a beautiful, loud waterfall hidden in the forest. You might also see large Sambar deer eating the grass near the park entrance. They are very used to people and will often walk right up to your car.

Flowers and Monkeys at Hakgala

If you enjoy walking but do not want to do the long hike at Horton Plains, you should visit the Hakgala Botanical Gardens. It is the second largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka, located just a few miles south of Nuwara Eliya. The garden is built on the steep side of the massive Hakgala rock.

Because of the cold climate, this garden is able to grow plants that you will not see anywhere else on the island. They have a massive collection of roses, a beautiful fernery built into a shaded valley, and hundreds of different types of orchids. The pathways wind up and down the hill, passing small streams and old wooden bridges.

While you are walking, you will definitely see the local monkeys. The purple-faced leaf monkey lives in the tall trees here. They look very different from the common brown monkeys you see in the lowlands. They have dark, furry bodies and a very distinct white beard around their dark faces. They are usually quite shy and stay high up in the branches, but they are great to watch with a pair of binoculars.

Strawberries and High Tea

Because the climate is so cool, the farming around Nuwara Eliya is unique. It is the only place in the country where they can easily grow carrots, leeks, cabbage, and most importantly, strawberries. You will see small farm stands on the side of the road selling bright red, fresh strawberries.

There are also several cafes near Lake Gregory that specialize in strawberry desserts. You can get strawberry pancakes, strawberry milkshakes, and fresh bowls of berries covered in thick cream. It is a very popular treat for anyone visiting the hills.

If you want a more classic experience, you can go to the Grand Hotel for their famous afternoon High Tea. The Grand Hotel is a massive, historic building with beautiful lawns. Every afternoon, they serve tea on the terrace. They bring you a silver stand filled with small sandwiches, warm scones, thick cream, jam, and little cakes, along with a pot of their finest tea. It is a very relaxing, fancy experience that makes you feel like you stepped back into the 1920s.

Practical Tips for the Cold

The most important thing to remember about Nuwara Eliya is the temperature. Many visitors forget that they are climbing so high up. During the day, it is usually quite pleasant, like a cool spring day. But as soon as the sun goes down, it gets very cold. In December and January, the temperature at night can drop to just a few degrees above freezing. You must pack warm clothes. Bring a thick sweater, a light rain jacket, long pants, and closed shoes.

Also, the weather changes very quickly. It might be bright and sunny at breakfast, and raining heavily by lunch. Always carry a small umbrella or a raincoat with you when you go out walking. Most of the older hotels do not have central heating, but they will provide thick blankets and sometimes small portable heaters for your room.
