Sri Lanka has two very distinct weather patterns. When the southern beaches like Galle and Mirissa are getting hit by heavy monsoon rain and rough ocean waves between May and October, the opposite side of the island is perfect. The East Coast wakes up. The sky turns clear, the sun beats down, and the ocean becomes as calm and flat as a swimming pool. The heart of this beautiful eastern coastline is the historic port city of Trincomalee.

Trincomalee, often just called Trinco by the locals, has a very different feeling from the busy southern towns. It is quieter, the roads are wider, and the pace of life is much slower. The area is famous for having one of the largest and deepest natural harbors in the whole world. Because of this harbor, the city has a long history of trading and battles. But today, the real treasures of Trincomalee are found just outside the city center, along its long, bright white sandy beaches and deep under the clear blue water.

The Sunny Side of the Island

When you drive into the Trincomalee area, you usually head straight for one of the two main beach towns: Uppuveli or Nilaveli. Uppuveli is closer to the city. It has a nice, relaxed vibe with plenty of small seafood restaurants and quiet beach bars built right onto the sand. The water here is very calm and warm, making it great for a long morning swim.

If you drive a little further north, you reach Nilaveli. This beach is even wider, cleaner, and much quieter. The sand is incredibly soft and white, and the ocean is a bright, clear turquoise color. It is common to walk for a long time on Nilaveli beach and only see a few other people. You will probably see more local cows resting on the warm sand than tourists. It is the ultimate place to unplug from the world and just enjoy the sound of small waves hitting the shore.

The Underwater World of Pigeon Island

While relaxing on Nilaveli beach is great, you absolutely must look out at the water. About one mile off the coast, you will see a small rocky island covered in a few trees. This is Pigeon Island, and it is the main reason people travel to Trincomalee. It is one of the only marine national parks in Sri Lanka, and it offers the best snorkeling experience in the country.

To get there, you hire a small motorboat from the beach. The ride only takes about ten or fifteen minutes. As soon as you step off the boat onto the coral-covered beach of the island, you put on your mask and snorkel and walk right into the shallow water. You do not have to swim far. The coral reef starts just a few feet from the shore.

The amount of life under the water is amazing. You will immediately see hundreds of brightly colored reef fish swimming around you. You will spot parrotfish, butterflyfish, and clownfish hiding in the sea anemones. But the real stars of Pigeon Island are the larger animals.

The area is famous for its blacktip reef sharks. They are completely harmless to humans, but seeing a shark swimming fast and smoothly through the water right in front of you is a major thrill. The reef is also home to many large sea turtles. They are very calm. If you swim slowly and do not splash, you can float right next to them while they eat sea grass and slowly swim up to the surface to take a breath of air. It is a magical, peaceful experience.

The Historic Fort Frederick

After you dry off from snorkeling, you should take some time to explore the history of the main city. Trincomalee sits on a large peninsula, and the entrance to this area is blocked by Fort Frederick. This fort was originally built by the Portuguese back in the 1600s using stones from old, destroyed temples. Later, it was taken over by the Dutch, and then by the British.

Today, the fort is still an active military base for the Sri Lankan army, but visitors are allowed to walk or drive through it. As you go through the massive stone gates, the first thing you notice is the wildlife. The fort is absolutely full of spotted deer. They are very tame and will walk right up to you hoping for a snack. The roads inside the fort are shaded by massive, old banyan trees with huge roots hanging down to the ground. It is a very strange but beautiful mix of old military history, religion, and nature.

Koneswaram Temple and Swami Rock

If you keep walking through Fort Frederick all the way to the end of the peninsula, you reach Swami Rock. This is a massive cliff that drops straight down into the deep blue ocean. Sitting right on the edge of this terrifying drop is the Koneswaram Temple. This is one of the most important Hindu temples in Sri Lanka.

Before you even enter the temple, you are greeted by a massive, golden statue of Lord Shiva sitting outside. The temple itself is brightly painted in hundreds of different colors, with detailed carvings of gods and animals covering every wall and roof. Pilgrims come here every day, breaking coconuts on the ground as an offering and tying small, colorful pieces of cloth to the trees to ask for good luck or a healthy child.

The view from the temple courtyard is unbeatable. You can look out over the entire natural harbor and see the deep blue water stretching to the horizon. There is a specific spot on the edge of the cliff known as Lover’s Leap. According to a sad local legend, a young woman jumped from this exact spot after her lover sailed away. Looking down at the rocks crashing against the bottom of the cliff, it is a dizzying and dramatic sight.

Kanniya Hot Water Springs

Another interesting spot near the city is the Kanniya Hot Water Springs. These are seven square stone wells built right into the ground. What is strange is that the water inside these wells is naturally very hot, and the temperature is slightly different in each well.

Locals believe the water has healing powers. For a very small ticket price, you can buy a small plastic bucket, dip it into the hot water, and pour it over your head and shoulders. It is a fun, cultural experience to stand alongside local families enjoying a warm, natural shower in the open air.

East Coast Whale Watching

Most people know about whale watching in the south, but Trincomalee is also a fantastic place to see these giant animals. Because the ocean floor drops into a deep underwater canyon very close to the land, whales come here to feed.

The whale watching season here runs from March to August. You take a boat out from the harbor early in the morning. Just like in the south, you have a very good chance of seeing blue whales, sperm whales, and massive pods of dolphins. The water here is usually much calmer than the southern ocean, making the boat ride a lot smoother and much better for people who easily get sea sick.

Food and Local Life

The food in Trincomalee is excellent, especially if you love seafood. Because it is a major fishing port, the fish, crabs, and prawns you eat for dinner were probably caught that same morning. The local style of cooking is heavily influenced by the Tamil community, meaning the curries are often richer, darker, and use a lot of roasted spices and fresh coconut.

Sitting at a small wooden table on the beach in Uppuveli, eating a massive plate of garlic butter prawns and a warm, soft roti bread while listening to the quiet ocean, is the perfect way to end the day.
