If you travel to the far southeastern corner of Sri Lanka, the roads get quieter. The thick jungles start to open up, and the landscape becomes drier and flatter. At the end of the road, hidden right on the edge of the Indian Ocean, is a town called Arugam Bay. Known to everyone simply as “A-Bay,” this small village is completely different from anywhere else on the island. It is the undisputed surfing capital of Sri Lanka, and it has a unique, totally relaxed atmosphere that makes it very hard to leave.

For a long time, Arugam Bay was a secret spot. Only the most dedicated, hardcore surfers knew about it. They would travel for days on bad roads just to ride the perfect waves. Today, the roads are much better, and the secret is out. But the town has managed to keep its cool, barefoot charm. There are no massive high-rise hotels here. Instead, there is one long main street lined with small wooden cafes, surfboard rental shops, and friendly guesthouses. It is a place where nobody wears shoes, everyone is smiling, and life revolves entirely around the ocean.

World-Class Breaks for the Experts

The main reason Arugam Bay is famous is the quality of its waves. The surfing season here runs from May to September. During these months, storms far away in the ocean push long, consistent swells toward the coast. The shape of the bay creates perfect right-hand point breaks. This means the wave starts breaking near a rocky point and peels perfectly to the right for a very long distance.

The most famous spot is simply called Main Point. It is located right at the southern end of the town beach. It is a fast, powerful wave that breaks over a shallow rock reef. On a good day, an experienced surfer can ride a single wave for hundreds of meters. Because it is so famous, it can get crowded. You will see surfers from Australia, Europe, and locals who grew up in the water all sitting out the back, waiting for the perfect set of waves.

Gentle Waves for Beginners

You do not need to be a professional to enjoy Arugam Bay. If you have never touched a surfboard in your life, this is actually a fantastic place to learn. Just a short tuk-tuk ride away from the main town are several other beaches with much gentler waves.

Whiskey Point is a very popular spot for beginners. The wave here is softer, slower, and breaks over sand, which is much safer when you fall off. There is a great local surf school culture here. You can rent a big, soft board, and a local instructor will push you into the waves and teach you how to stand up.

Another excellent spot is Peanut Farm. It is located down a bumpy, sandy dirt road. The beach is beautiful, surrounded by trees, and it has a very mellow wave that is perfect for learning the basics or for longboarders who just want a smooth, easy ride. Spending the morning at Peanut Farm, catching small waves, and drinking a fresh coconut on the beach is the perfect Arugam Bay experience.

Climbing Elephant Rock

Surfing is not the only thing to do in Arugam Bay. The nature around the town is wild and beautiful. At the far end of the bay, you will see a massive, dark rock formation sticking out into the water. Because of its shape, it is called Elephant Rock.

To get there, you have to walk down the beach and cross a small river inlet. You need to be very careful when crossing this water, especially near sunset, because wild crocodiles live in the lagoon behind the beach. Once you cross, you can climb up the back of Elephant Rock. It is a short, steep climb. From the top, you get an incredible view. You look down on the surfers catching waves on one side, and on the other side, you look out over the wild, empty coastline stretching south towards the national parks. It is the most popular spot in town to sit and watch the sunset.

Wildlife on the Pottuvil Lagoon

Just a few miles north of Arugam Bay is the Pottuvil Lagoon. If your arms are too tired from surfing, taking an eco-safari on this lagoon is highly recommended. The local fishermen have organized a system where they take visitors out onto the water in traditional, motor-less wooden canoes.

The trip is incredibly quiet and peaceful. You slowly paddle through thick green mangrove forests. The guides have amazing eyes and will point out wildlife you would never see on your own. The lagoon is full of life. You will see huge monitor lizards sleeping on branches, water buffalo cooling off in the mud, and massive crocodiles waiting silently on the banks. It is also a paradise for birds, with hundreds of bright kingfishers, eagles, and pelicans flying around. Best of all, because there is no engine noise, you can get very close to the animals without scaring them.

Exploring Kumana National Park

If you want a traditional jeep safari but do not want to deal with the large crowds at Yala National Park, Arugam Bay is the gateway to a perfect alternative. Kumana National Park is located just south of the town, at the very end of the coastal road.

Kumana is actually connected to Yala; it is just the eastern block. This means it has the exact same animals, including elephants, sloth bears, and the famous Sri Lankan leopard. The big difference is the number of visitors. Kumana is much, much quieter. You can drive for an hour without seeing another jeep. It is also famous across Asia for its birdlife. In the center of the park is a massive swamp area where thousands of birds come to nest and raise their young. A half-day trip to Kumana is a great way to see wild animals in a very calm, natural setting.

Ancient Temples in the Sand

The eastern province is also deeply historical. Right next to the town of Pottuvil, you can visit the Muhudu Maha Viharaya. This is an ancient Buddhist temple located right on the beach, surrounded by sand dunes. The history says it was built over 2,000 years ago. Today, you can see tall stone statues of the Buddha looking out over the ocean, with the ruins of ancient pillars half-buried in the white sand.

Further inland, hidden in the jungle, is the Magul Maha Viharaya. This is another massive ruined temple complex. According to the stories, this is the exact place where an ancient king and queen were married. Walking through the quiet stone ruins, surrounded by thick jungle and the sound of birds, gives you a great sense of Sri Lanka’s deep cultural roots.

The Cafe and Food Scene

Because Arugam Bay attracts young, international travelers, the food scene is incredible. The main street is packed with small, open-air cafes that mix local Sri Lankan food with international healthy eating.

You can start your morning with a massive bowl of fresh fruit, homemade granola, and thick local curd, accompanied by excellent espresso coffee. For lunch, you can stop at a small street cart for a spicy chicken roti or a vegetable samosa.
