Whitewater Rafting and Kitesurfing in Sri Lanka

Most travelers come to Sri Lanka expecting to spend their days lying on a sunbed, holding a cold drink, and watching the waves roll in. The island is definitely a paradise for relaxing. But if you are the kind of person who gets bored after two days of sitting still, you are in luck. Sri Lanka has quietly become one of the premier adventure sports destinations in South Asia.

Beyond the famous surfing spots, the island offers some incredibly thrilling activities. Because the landscape changes so drastically from the high, wet mountains to the flat, windy coastal lagoons, you can find world-class adventure sports separated by just a few hours of driving. If you want to get your heart rate up, get totally soaked, and experience the wilder side of the country, you need to add whitewater rafting and kitesurfing to your itinerary.

The Jungle Rapids of Kitulgala

If you want to experience the power of Sri Lanka’s rivers, you have to travel to Kitulgala. This is a small, incredibly green town located in the wet zone, surrounded by thick rainforest and steep hills. The town sits right on the edge of the Kelani River, which is one of the widest and fastest rivers on the island.

Kitulgala is actually famous in the movie world. Back in 1957, the epic war movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai” was filmed right here. You can still walk down to the riverbank and see the concrete foundations where the massive wooden movie bridge used to stand. But today, people do not come here for movie history; they come for the rapids.

The whitewater rafting here is fantastic. It is usually graded as a Class 2 and Class 3 river. This means it is thrilling, fast, and very wet, but it is not terrifyingly dangerous. You do not need any previous rafting experience to do it. After a safety briefing, you put on your helmet and life jacket, grab a paddle, and jump into a large rubber raft with a local guide.

The first part of the river is calm, allowing you to practice paddling together. Then, you hear the roar of the water. The raft drops into the main rapids, spinning and bouncing over the white foam. The guides shout commands to paddle hard or get down. Cold river water crashes over the front of the boat, soaking everyone. The main rapid section takes about an hour, and between the fast sections, the river slows down. You can jump out of the raft and float calmly on your back, looking up at the massive jungle trees hanging over the water.

Jungle Canyoning: Sliding Down the Rocks

While you are in Kitulgala, you should combine your rafting trip with a canyoning adventure. Canyoning is basically hiking, but instead of walking on a dirt path, you walk, slide, and jump straight down a rocky jungle stream.

You hike up into the forest until you find a series of small, natural rock pools. Over thousands of years, the water has worn the rocks completely smooth. The guides will show you how to sit on the smooth rock and slide backward down the small waterfalls, dropping into the deep, cold pools of water below. Further down the stream, there are specific spots where you can stand on a high rock ledge and jump freely into the deep water. It feels like playing in a massive, natural water park hidden deep inside the jungle.

Kalpitiya: The Kitesurfing Capital of Asia

If you want a totally different kind of thrill, you have to leave the wet jungle and drive up to the dry northwest coast. Here, you will find a long, sandy peninsula called Kalpitiya. For a long time, this was just a quiet area known for fishing and dolphin watching. Then, the kitesurfers discovered it.

Kalpitiya is unique because of its geography. On one side of the peninsula is the open Indian Ocean. On the other side is a massive, flat, shallow lagoon. During the main windy season (from May to September) and the secondary windy season (from December to March), strong, consistent winds blow across the sand. This combination of strong wind and perfectly flat, shallow water makes Kalpitiya one of the absolute best places in the world to learn and practice kitesurfing.

Learning to Fly on the Water

When you arrive at the lagoon, the sky is completely filled with massive, brightly colored kites. You will see professional riders jumping incredibly high into the air, spinning, and performing massive tricks before landing smoothly on the water.

If you are a beginner, the lagoon is the perfect classroom. The water is only waist-deep, so if you fall off the board, you just stand up. There are no waves to knock you over, and the water is very warm. There are dozens of excellent, certified kitesurfing schools lined up along the edge of the lagoon. A standard beginner course takes about three to four days. You start by learning how to control a small training kite on the beach. Once you understand the wind power, you move into the water with a larger kite, practicing how to use your body weight against the wind. Finally, you get on the board. The feeling of catching the wind perfectly and silently sliding across the top of the water is incredibly addictive.
